English for Speakers of Other Languages

The mission of the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program at MCC is to provide students learning English as an additional language with intensive study of academic English as well as holistic support as they develop autonomy in pursuit of their academic and career goals. English learners are encouraged to apply to the ES02 English Language Proficiency Certificate Program to get started at MCC.

Students who have a foreign HS diploma, came to the U.S. and entered high school after 9th grade, or took any ESOL/ESL course in high school in the U.S. (grades 9-12), will take the MCC approved ESOL placement test. After you apply to MCC you can visit the Global Education & International Services (GEIS) website or email the GEIS office to schedule a placement test or get more information. 

The ESOL Program has three levels: high intermediate, low advanced, and high advanced. Students who test at the low advanced or high advanced levels take 1 to 2 ESOL classes per semester.  At the same time, many students take classes that count towards MCC degree and certificate programs. Students who test at the high intermediate level have two options. They can take (1) the noncredit Strong Foundations ESOL Program or (2) ESL 100 + ESL 120 credit classes with one approved introductory level college course. Meeting with an ESOL advisor is strongly recommended to help determine which option is best for you.
